NaPoWriMo Day 4

NaPoWriMo Day 4 was really challenging! The prompt was to write a sad poem in sonnet form. Taking inspiration from ‘Grave of the Fireflies’, the greatest, saddest film that I’ve ever seen, here’s my poem for today.

4th April

The Little Firefly
The little firefly unfolded her wings
(Tiny, but majestic like that of king)
And battled against her dying hunger,
As she searched for food beyond yonder.
Alas! Wings struggled to hold tiny body aloft
While she weather’d storms that oft
Plagued and beat at every turn,
And even her light could not bright’n the worn
Spirit that plummeted, dimming the glow
Fading like withering wisp o’ willow.
Yet, brave firefly wrestl’d through grim night,
Determined to not give up the fierce fight.
But when night to morning finally gave,
All that remain’d was a freshly dug grave.
