NaPoWriMo Day 2

NaPoWriMo Day 2

Hey everyone!
Made it to day two. Hoping I can make it until the whole month!
Today’s prompt was to write about a particular place and seeing as I’m mostly cooped up in the house during this time, here’s a poem dedicated specifically to my room.
Happy Reading!

NaPoWriMo Day 15

NaPoWriMo Day 15! The prompt for today was to write an idea of a poem as a sort of tiny play, which can be performed dramatically— an incredibly challenging prompt! I took inspiration from the Bengali dance drama ‘Chitrangada’ by Rabindranath Tagore which depicts a story from Mahabharata about Chitrangada, a fierce warrior princess and Arjuna, the Pandava. The story revolves around Chitrangada transforming herself to win over Arjuna after being rejected for not being feminine enough. However, she realises that she is denying her own identity and thus the love itself is false. When Arjuna hears about the warrior princess from her villagers, he is highly impressed and she finally reveals her true self to him. In this monologue, Chitrangada addresses Arjuna to accept her real identity.

NaPoWriMo Day 14

NaPoWriMo Day 14! Today’s prompt was certainly amusing to write! The prompt was to pen a poem that incorporated the peculiarities and idiosyncrasies of the English language like homographs, homophones, misspellings etc. Along with homophones, I chose to also focus on those poor words that cannot exist without their negative prefixes in this absolutely nonsensical poem.

Happy Reading! (over a cup of English tee perhaps?)

NaPoWriMo Day 13

NaPoWriMo Day 13! The prompt for today was to write something mysterious and spooky (in a good way or a bad way). I ended up writing two short poems even though I get spooked easily! The first one was inspired loosely by the Japanese film ’Shutter’ while the second is based on a study which revealed that most people do see their faces morphing when they gaze too long in the mirror.

Happy (Scary) Reading!

NaPoWriMo Day 12

NaPoWriMo Day 12! Today’s prompt was to write on why we love a dull object or alternatively, what would it mean to destroy a significant object. I chose the latter and opted to write on my jhula (swing in Hindi). A bit of background about my jhula: It is a replicate of a Sindhi jhula that belonged to my grandmother which she brought to India after Partition. Passed down from daughter to daughter, the original is with my aunt and is over 100 years old. Although my replica is a younger sibling, it has been in my family for generations and so I decided to pen down how I would feel if I ever had to destroy my jhula.

Happy Reading! (I apologise for the spelling error in second verse 🙈)

NaPoWriMo Day 11

NaPoWriMo Day 11! Today’s prompt was to write about where we are from and where we are now. I wrote various ideas on this prompt but I just kept coming back to my lineage. Talking about my complicated lineage is often tough for me. So I decided to tweak the prompt and instead express my thoughts on my origins.

Happy Reading!

NaPoWriMo Day 10

NaPoWriMo Day 10! The prompt for today was to use a regional expression or idiom about weather. The expressions I’ve used today are from the Hindi language. They are as follows: अंगारे बरसना and  इंद्र का क्रोध होना

The first one literally translates to ‘shower of coal or embers’ and means extreme heat. The second expression is one that my father loved using as a child. Literally translated, it means ‘the anger or wrath of Indra.’ In Indian mythology, Indra is the God of rains and thus, the phrase is used to describe heavy rains. Additionally, वज्र (vajra) means thunderbolt which serves as Lord Indra’s weapon. बरसात, the title of the poem, is another word for shower thus signifying shower of heat and rain. This poem is in acknowledgment of the droughts faced in Maharashtra, my home state.

NaPoWriMo Day 9

NaPoWriMo Day 9! Today’s prompt was to write a poem on list of things inspired by the style of Sei Shonagon, a Japanese writer who lived thousands of years ago. Shonagon was known for her observations on life and thus, this poem revolves around observations on wonders of nature. Sticking to the theme of Japanese culture, this poem consists of haikus- A style I had never attempted before. Happy Reading!

NaPoWriMo Day 8

NaPoWriMo Day 8! The prompt for today was to construct a poem with any technical jargon or slang word as the central metaphor. I took liberty with the prompt and incorporated three such words in the field of photography: hard light (technique that harshens features), soft light (which softens the features) and golden hour (the best time to take a photo I.e. just before sunrise or after sunset). For me, golden hour symbolises new choices. This poem is also a tribute to the famous poem ‘Road Not Taken’ by Robert Frost. Happy Reading!

8th April

Golden Hour

As I trudged on unmarked trail,

I wonder’d if this choice would fail,

The forest look’d bleak

With its turbulent creek

While branches in hard light curled inwards —

Stark, sharp shards bending towards,

Seeking my perplexed soul.

I hastened my tread,

Each step a burden’d dread.

While shadows flicker’d in soft light

Dancing to songs of wayward sprites.

My heartbeat resounded,

As all doubts resurfaced

Just then,

The forest was set ablaze,

By the ricocheting rays

The fresh start I made seemed clearer,

Life had finally given me an answer —

For I had attained my golden hour.

NaPoWriMo Day 7

Hurrah! One week of NaPoWriMo done! Today’s prompt was to write a poem of gifts that we would give ourselves and others. The left page is my interpretation while the right page in parentheses, expresses my thoughts regarding the complexity of the prompt. Happy Reading!
